Houhora, Northland, New Zealand

Notes: Houhora is about 45 Km north of Kaitaia, in the North Island of New Zealand. It is known as the location of the last pub north in the country, and has a significant colonial history. Much of the Aupouri Peninsula, north of Kaitaia, is the source of semi-fossilised resin known as Kauri Gum (amber), and in the early 1900s there were thousands of people struggling to recover this treasure from the swamps and sand dunes of the area.
Subsequent to that time the peninsula has been developed for farming, horticulture and forestry, but many of the families remain, scattered through small farming communities like Houhora, Pukenui, Motutangi, Waiharara, Awanui and Sweetwater, not to mention the many Maori settlements farther north.
