Christ Church, Taita, Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand

Notes:
Christ Church Taita is the oldest surviving church in the Wellington Region. Built by local parishioners in 1853 the first service was on 1st January 1854.

The first wedding held at Christ Church was 10 days later on 11 Jan 1854. The first two marriages held at Christ church are recorded in the Marriage Register of Church of St James, River Hutt. They are

No 1 James Harris of The Taita bachelor and Mary Jane Mabey of the Taita, spinster were married in Christ Church Taita by License with the consent of parents this Eleventh day of January in the year 1854.
Witnesses Mary Anne Harris
Edward Harris

No. 2 John Houghton of Wellington, widower, and Mary Anne Harris, of Taita spinster were married in Christ Church Taita by License with the consent of parents this Eighteenth day of April in the year 1854
Witnesses Mary Mabey
Rob Robinson

Most of the records of the Church were destroyed in a fire at St James’ Church Lower Hutt in 1946.

In 1948, a new train line through the valley to the Wairarapa cut the Church off from the rapidly growing community, and the Anglican Church decided to move the church to Stokes Valley. This caused an outcry and a public meeting in 1950 voted to leave the Church on its original site. The Preservation Society was formed and has since taken responsibility for the care and maintenance of the church and its graveyard. This was the first time New Zealanders had lobbied to save an historic building and was one of the factors for Parliament deciding to pass the Historic Places Act (1954) and subsequently the formation of the Historic Places Trust.

In 1989 the church was badly damaged by fire (Dominion Sunday Times 11 Dec 1989). The church was restored from insurance and funds raised by public appeal. The dedication Service for the Restored church was held on 6 Oct 1991.

Christ Church is a consecrated church used for, weddings, baptisms and funerals, and special services.
