Muriel was born at Onehunga while her parents were living at Mangare, on 15th August 1916. Later her parents transferred to Epsom Avenue, Auckland. She attended St. Cuthberts College all her school days first in the old buildings in Stoke Road, Mt.Eden and later in their new buildings in Market Road Epsom. Following her Mother's death she kept house for her Father and was a keen tennis player. The onset of Rheumatic Fever interfered with her sports career.
She then trained as a typist and during the Second World War took a position at the Ellerslie Military Hospital, Greenlane.
Here she meet Noel Emmett Burke whom she married at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Mt.Eden on 23rd August,1945. The reception was held at the Mt.Eden Kiosk, her Aunt Jemima Scott acting as hostess.
For a time Noel worked for the American Base in Auckland and then secured a farm on the outskirts of Matamata, Here on his 50 odd acres dairy farm they lived until their retirement in 1974. Both Muriel and her husband, Noel, were keen sports people. They now live in a lovely split level home in Matamata (2A Hampton Tce.).
They have three sons, Derrick, Gary and Douglas.
Derrick attended the Matamata primary and secondary Schools. He then entered the employment of the Bank of New Zealand. He married Dorothy Findlay on 26th August 1972 and at this time is employed at Wellington Branch of the Bank of NZ.(1975).
Gary also attended the same Matamata schools and started working for Dalgety and Co in Matamata . He later transferred to TePuke as a stock agent. (Previous to this he spent one year at a Hakataramea Sheep Station.) He married Marilyn Ormsby.
Douglas also had his schooling at Matamata and then took his B.Com. degree at Auckland University. On completion he worked for a firm of Public Accountants in Auckland. In June 1975 he is about to leave for North America and England.
